Stillwater, MN. The Greater Stillwater Chamber of Commerce celebrated the much anticipated opening of The Washington County Heritage Museum with a ribbon cutting celebration on October 15, 2021. The event took place at 1862 Greeley Street S., Stillwater, MN at the newly renovated office building that has been transformed into a modern museum and education center. Brent Peterson, Executive Director of the Washington County Historical Society, Board members, City Council, City Administrators,  Greater Stillwater Chamber ambassadors and staff and community members were in attendance.

The new facility offers historical artifacts, a classroom space, and an experiential space to really see and feel how people lived and worked here 150 years ago. It also gives much due recognition to photographer John Runk, who was able to document life in Washington County during the logging and lumberjack years. Fashions from years past are showcased and changed out every 18 months as well as exhibits from the towns within Washington County. The first exhibit will be about John “Bud” Fowler, who is believed to be the first black professional baseball player in America. Peterson says the Heritage Center showcases how “we stand on the shoulders of those who came before us.”

Peterson is an enthusiastic guide painting vivid stories both adults and children will enjoy. The Museum has been 16 years in the making and welcomes organizations using the classroom space, exposing more to the rich experiences of ‘days gone by.’  You can visit the Heritage Museum Tuesdays - Sundays from 10:00am-4:00pm.
