August 8, 2019. Stillwater, MN. The Greater Stillwater Chamber of Commerce welcomed new member, Operatunity Theatre, at a ribbon cutting celebration on August 7, 2019. The event took place on the Historic Stillwater Library Terrace. Operatunity Theatre founders, supporters, friends, Chamber Ambassadors and staff were there to join in the celebration. Their first event, Opera on the River, a free to the public concert, will take place Saturday, August 10 at 7 pm in Lowell Park, Stillwater.
Obed and Megan, husband and wife duo, have a vision to establish Stillwater and its surroundings as a regional music cultural center with a vibrant community of emerging and professional artists. Operatunity Theatre is a non-profit organization designed to produce high quality musical art performances for the valley, and has the goal of building an annual nationally, and ultimately internationally recognized music festival in the Stillwater area.
Explore Minnesota has become one of their main sponsors, along with Friends of Stillwater Parks, and an anonymous donor. Many local businesses and organizations have also shown their support as corporate sponsors. In the words of Stillwater City Council Member and Opera on the River supporter, Mike Pohlena, “It’s important that we bring the arts to Stillwater, not least, because it gets people and families out to meet their neighbors, and makes for a better community.”
When asked about his future, Floan said, “We are most looking forward to collaborating with and uplifting the various other performing arts entities in the valley.” The couple is moving into the Stillwater area soon to become active contributing members of the community and region. In another of the duos pursuits, M-O Studio Enterprises LLC, they teach voice lessons, host recitals and workshops, adjudicate solo/ensemble competitions for the Minnesota State High School League, are guest clinicians for master classes, and hold private lessons after school through community ed. Megan also teaches part-time on the vocal faculty of a local college, and is finishing her Doctorate in Musical Arts from the University of Oklahoma. In their spare time they give back to the community by working with the drama and music programs at area schools. Megan music directed the middle school productions, and Obed coached students in the Les Misérable production at Stillwater Area High School this past spring.
